Palarong Pambansa 2015 Opens in Davao del Norte

Finally, the Palarong Pambansa 2015 kicked off with a bang in Tagum, Davao del Norte  on May 4, 2015 during the formal opening program.

The weather cooperated during the colorful Parade of Athletes as the sun shone brightly as each delegation from different regions marched to the beat of their region's music. I thought if we couldn't go to the SEAGames or the Olympics, they're probably like what we witnessed. I couldn't help but cheer the athletes as they marched and danced in unison in their region's uniforms which make up the colors of the rainbow.

Regions 1 and 2 were prepared for both heat and rain as they brought their umbrellas. For those who cannot go to the Sinulog, Central Visayas brought the Sinulog to them. The delegation from SOCSKSARGEN in their purple attire executed a "production number" in their march capping it with a banner that says "Manny Pacquiao, Finest SOCSKSARGEN Warrior!" It earned a rousing cheer from the crowd. Bringing up the rear was, of course, Region 11, Davao Region, where Davao del Norte, the Host Province, belongs. The banners of each city and municipality were like paintings of tourist spots and symbols of the places with a "flying" Philippine Eagle at the end.

What excited the crowd was when paratroopers of the Philippine Army did their exhibition jumps which sent it cheering in suspense.

The Governor of Davao del Norte, Rodolfo P. Del Rosario gave his Message as Father of the Host province after Mayor Allan Rellon of Tagum formally welcomed everyone to Tagum City, where the seat of the Provincial Government is located. Bro. Armin Luistro was supposed to introduce the Keynote Speaker, Hon. Mar Roxas, Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, who opted to dismiss the crowd due to the rains which poured on the second half of the program.

Despite the heavy rains, the Field Demonstration at the end of the Opening Program continued with the 1,500-strong group of selected teachers and students dancing their hearts out in the open field. With thunder and lightning merging into the beat of the music, it was still one spectacular production number like no other.

In the rain, no rain, no thunder, and not even a "black bug attack" could dampen the spirits of the Dabaonons and the athletes, coaches, technical officials and those who are part of the best Palaro so far. And the Palarong Pambansa games began!

Here are some of the highlights of the Parade of Athletes and Salute to Friendship as caught by the lenses of my hubby. Seeing those contingents from the 17 regions was like a lesson in Geography but better and more colorful and interesting!
